OPEN THE GATES
On arrival
Confirm the product, pack size, and whether it is dry food, prepared diet, bedding, a culture medium, or empty equipment. Open dry supplies with clean tools and keep the original label or preparation instructions with them.
BUILD THE REFUGE
A secure holding setup
Use clean containers with ventilation suited to the smallest insects being housed. An empty deli cup is not a complete culture, and a lid must match the cup and retain the animals. Keep dry supplies sealed, labeled, and protected from dampness.
KEEP A STEADY WATCH
Temperature & placement
Store the supply according to its label rather than the temperature used to keep the insect. Prepared chow may have different storage and expiry rules from the dry powder. Keep food away from heat sources and direct sun.
PROVISION THE COLONY
Food & hydration
Choose roach or cricket feed for those feeders, bran for a suitable grain-bed species, mulberry-based chow for silkworms, prepared hornworm food for hornworms, and fruit-fly medium for Drosophila cultures. Do not substitute diets based only on color or texture. Follow the stated water ratio when preparing a medium.
THE DAILY WATCH
Care between feedings
Prepare small usable batches, date prepared food, remove spoiled portions, and clean feeding tools between cultures. Gut-loading means providing an appropriate diet before a feeder is eaten; it does not automatically replace the calcium, vitamin, or feeding guidance for the pet that eats it.
AVOID THE COMMON TRAPS
Mistakes worth preventing
- Guessing water ratios for a powdered medium.
- Letting hydration gel or fresh produce soak a dry grain bed.
- Assuming a food’s marketing name means it is appropriate for every insect.
