Fruit Fly Culture Care Sheet

Wingless fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) on culture media

✦ THE KEEPER’S ROYAL CHRONICLES ✦

Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila hydei

Fruit Fly Cultures

Build a rolling supply of tiny feeders by tending the culture, not just the flies you can see today.

OPEN THE GATES

On arrival

Keep the culture upright and inspect the lid, medium, and adults. Check whether it was sold as freshly started or already producing. A fresh culture may contain developing stages before it produces a large number of visible adults.

BUILD THE REFUGE

A secure holding setup

Use a secure cup with fine breathable ventilation, prepared medium, and clean climbing material appropriate to the culture. Keep the lid in place except during controlled transfers. Flightless or wingless strains can still climb and escape through gaps.

KEEP A STEADY WATCH

Temperature & placement

Common Drosophila cultures are generally maintained around 68–77°F (20–25°C), away from direct sun. Avoid hot enclosure tops and prolonged overheating. Development varies with species and conditions; hydei and melanogaster should not be expected to produce on exactly the same schedule.

PROVISION THE COLONY

Food & hydration

Prepare the culture medium according to its label. It should support development without becoming flooded, dried solid, or excessively contaminated. Do not add water by guesswork to a failing culture. Use clean cups and tools when starting fresh batches.

Prepare with Fruit Fly Culture Media, Fabric Vented Lid (Fits 32oz Deli Cup). Check each product’s directions before use.

THE DAILY WATCH

Care between feedings

Start dated backup cultures before the current one stops producing. Transfer only part of the adults so the parent culture retains stock. Inspect for mites and spoilage, and separate suspect cultures from clean backups. Tap a controlled portion into a feeding cup, then close the lid promptly.

AVOID THE COMMON TRAPS

Mistakes worth preventing

  • Treating every named color or strain as the same species.
  • Overheating cultures to force faster production.
  • Harvesting all adults from your only producing culture.

ASK THE KEEPERS

Before the next feeding

Do all these flies share one identity?

No. Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila hydei are different species. Flightless and wingless describe traits or strains, not one shared species. Keep labeled cultures separate so a strain name or mixed culture does not obscure which flies you are raising.

Can I keep a culture in the fridge?

Use suitable culture temperatures for ongoing production. Chilling a whole colony as a storage shortcut can interrupt or damage it.
