Isopods do not need a bright basking lamp. Most spend daylight under leaves, bark, and soil, then become more active when light levels fall. A normal room day-night cycle is usually sufficient for culture bins.
Prioritize shade and stable temperature
Every enclosure should contain deep shaded cover. Never place a culture in direct sun; even a cool room can produce dangerous heat inside a clear container.
Display lights are for the habitat
A planted terrarium may need suitable plant lighting. Measure temperature at substrate level and preserve dark refuges. The light should not dry the damp end before the next normal maintenance check.
Avoid constant illumination
Continuous bright light removes the normal dark period and can reduce visible activity. Use a timer if dedicated lights are installed, and keep the schedule consistent rather than changing it daily.
Use brief observation light
A flashlight is useful for checks, but avoid holding a hot lamp close to the enclosure for photography or prolonged viewing. Short, cool, indirect observation is enough.
Quick checklist
- No direct sunlight
- Dark hides always available
- Display lights on a timer
- Substrate temperature checked
Balance light with moisture and airflow using the moisture-gradient guide.
