OPEN THE GATES
On arrival
Check the culture for adults and larvae without discarding the fine medium. The small pale larvae can be difficult to see. Keep the container labeled with species and start date.
BUILD THE REFUGE
A secure holding setup
Use a clean culture cup with a secure lid and fine ventilation. Keep the prepared grain medium dry. Flour beetles are stored-food insects, so prevent escapes and keep cultures physically separate from food cupboards and bulk grain supplies.
KEEP A STEADY WATCH
Temperature & placement
Choose stable room conditions and keep the cup out of direct sun. Condensation and damp medium signal a setup problem. Warming a culture without measurement is not a reliable way to improve production.
PROVISION THE COLONY
Food & hydration
Use a suitable prepared flour-beetle blend. Do not assume that beans, silkworm chow, or wet fruit-fly medium can replace it. Add only the food and moisture specified for that culture system; do not turn the dry medium into paste.
Prepare with Rice Flour Beetle Blend, Rice Flour Beetle Culture Kit. Check each product’s directions before use.
THE DAILY WATCH
Care between feedings
Harvest into a separate cup using clean tools and an appropriate sieve. Leave enough healthy stock to sustain the culture. Start a new dated batch before the old medium is heavily depleted or contaminated, and keep a separate backup.
AVOID THE COMMON TRAPS
Mistakes worth preventing
- Opening the cup beside kitchen flour or cereal.
- Adding water to the whole medium.
- Assuming an adult beetle and a larva are the same feeder size.
