OPEN THE GATES
On arrival
Confirm whether the listing supplies larvae, adult beetles, or a starter colony. Prepare a labeled holding container first. Do not assume that every culture labeled beetles contains a specified proportion of adults and larvae.
BUILD THE REFUGE
A secure holding setup
Use a smooth-sided container with secure fine ventilation and a suitable dry culture base. Maintain access for waste removal and provide only controlled moisture. Keep the colony away from pantry food and prevent escape into the building.
KEEP A STEADY WATCH
Temperature & placement
Use stable room conditions and protect the culture from direct sun and cold drafts. Check for damp waste and condensation before adding heat. Follow any batch-specific culture instructions supplied with the order.
PROVISION THE COLONY
Food & hydration
Provide an appropriate grain-based feeder diet and small, removable portions of suitable moisture food when required by the culture setup. Keep the base dry and avoid spoiled leftovers. Choose the actual larval size for a pet rather than assuming the common name defines its suitability.
THE DAILY WATCH
Care between feedings
Inspect activity, spoiled food, dead beetles, and bedding condition. Keep a separate breeder reserve if you intend to harvest larvae regularly. A cleanup role in a roach colony does not remove the need to clean, and it does not establish compatibility with every animal enclosure.
AVOID THE COMMON TRAPS
Mistakes worth preventing
- Adding an unconfirmed cleanup culture to every terrarium.
- Letting damp waste replace fresh medium.
- Confusing these with Tenebrio mealworms or dermestid beetles.
