OPEN THE GATES
On arrival
Inspect the culture without emptying its beans. Adults on the surface are only part of the population; eggs and developing larvae may be associated with the beans. Keep the batch labeled and separate from household food storage.
BUILD THE REFUGE
A secure holding setup
Use a tightly closed, ventilated culture vessel with mesh fine enough for the adults. Retain the suitable dry beans supplied with the culture. Do not replace them with arbitrary beans from the pantry; bean species differ in their suitability for development.
KEEP A STEADY WATCH
Temperature & placement
Keep the culture in a stable room location away from direct sun, damp shelves, and sudden temperature changes. Maintain a dry setup rather than treating it like a moist fruit-fly culture.
PROVISION THE COLONY
Food & hydration
Larvae develop within suitable beans. Adult Callosobruchus maculatus do not require added food or drinking water. Do not mist the beans or add wet produce; this introduces spoilage rather than helping the adults.
Prepare with Bean Beetle Blend, Bean Beetle Culture Kit. Check each product’s directions before use.
THE DAILY WATCH
Care between feedings
Start a fresh dated container with appropriate clean dry beans and some healthy adults before the older culture declines. Keep a backup rather than harvesting every adult at once. Use a controlled sorting cup when feeding, and do not release surplus beetles or culture beans outdoors.
AVOID THE COMMON TRAPS
Mistakes worth preventing
- Adding water, fruit, or damp substrate.
- Assuming all bean species work equally well.
- Discarding apparently inactive beans that contain developing beetles.
