Specialist Wandering Spider Care Essentials

These are specialist observation animals. A family name or collecting label does not establish venom risk or a complete husbandry profile.

Featured animalPiloctenus haematostoma – Red Fang Wandering Spider
Representative catalog photo; follow the notes for your animal.
Care confirmation needed. This page gives containment and care-planning guidance. The animals listed here do not share a verified, universal climate recipe. Confirm the actual stock requirements before acquisition.

Enclosure & shelter

Before acquisition, obtain stock identification, life stage, current enclosure arrangement and the keeper's maintenance procedure. Use secure primary containment within a controlled secondary work area. Supply sheltered retreats and usable ground or bark surfaces only after the actual stock's behavior is confirmed.

Water, moisture & temperature

No universal temperature or humidity recipe is established here for Piloctenus, Africactenus or an unidentified 'Ctenidae sp.' stock. Obtain the breeder's successful conditions rather than guessing from continent or color.

Feeding & molting

Use captive-bred insect prey appropriate to the animal's size. Avoid manual feeding or provoking threat displays. Remove uneaten prey safely and leave the animal undisturbed around a molt.

Keeper FAQs

Is every wandering spider Phoneutria?

No. A shared family or common name does not make different genera the same animal.

Does an unidentified ctenid have harmless venom?

That cannot be assumed. Treat uncertain venom significance conservatively and avoid handling.

Can I use the care sheet for a similar-looking spider?

Only for clearly identified general principles. Exact housing, moisture and temperature conditions need stock-specific support.

Are Mamfe Road and Cameroon species names?

They are trade or locality labels in these listings, not a fully resolved scientific identification.

Everyday care checks

Check containment, drinking access and the animal's condition each day. Use captive-bred feeder insects appropriate to its size, remove leftovers and keep a record of feeding, molts and enclosure changes. Separate new arrivals from established animals and keep specimens individually as the default.

Keep pesticide sprays, scented cleaners and treated furnishings away from enclosures. Avoid direct sun and uncontrolled heat. A thermometer measures temperature; a humidity reading cannot tell you whether a burrow is dry, saturated or structurally stable.

Observe without handling. Do not force open sealed retreats or disturb a molting animal. Persistent weakness, injury or an unsuccessful molt needs experienced veterinary assessment rather than repeated improvised changes.

These guides explain care principles and important exceptions. A listing name does not independently identify a specimen, and related animals can need different conditions. For uncertain stock, ask Isopod King for its established care and provenance before choosing equipment.
