Eresus Velvet Spider Care Essentials

Eresus are retreat-building spiders with very different adult male and female appearances. Protect the silk retreat and avoid treating a small velvet spider like a tropical arboreal tarantula.

Enclosure & shelter

Provide an escape-resistant enclosure with diggable substrate and light, firmly placed web anchors. Avoid heavy loose decor and unnecessary complete enclosure rebuilds. Give the animal cover rather than forcing it to stay visible.

Water, moisture & temperature

Use the stock's established hydration method and maintain good ventilation. Keepers report relatively dry setups for E. walckenaeri, but 'dry' should not become an unsupported claim that every Eresus life stage never needs access to drinking moisture. E. ruficapillus requires its own confirmed stock conditions.

Feeding & molting

Offer small captive-bred insects appropriate to the spider's body size. Remove uneaten prey and protect the retreat during premolt. Do not force a feeding response.

Keeper FAQs

Why is mine not red with black dots?

The familiar ladybird appearance is associated with mature males in some Eresus. Females and juveniles can look very different.

Should the whole enclosure stay wet?

Do not use a saturated tropical setup without species-specific evidence.

Can it live with another velvet spider?

House individually; a family-level reputation for sociality does not establish communal safety for these stocks.

Can I feed immediately after a molt?

Wait until the spider has hardened and can safely take prey. A fixed number of days is not reliable for every size.

Everyday care checks

Check containment, drinking access and the animal's condition each day. Use captive-bred feeder insects appropriate to its size, remove leftovers and keep a record of feeding, molts and enclosure changes. Separate new arrivals from established animals and keep specimens individually as the default.

Keep pesticide sprays, scented cleaners and treated furnishings away from enclosures. Avoid direct sun and uncontrolled heat. A thermometer measures temperature; a humidity reading cannot tell you whether a burrow is dry, saturated or structurally stable.

Observe without handling. Do not force open sealed retreats or disturb a molting animal. Persistent weakness, injury or an unsuccessful molt needs experienced veterinary assessment rather than repeated improvised changes.

These guides explain care principles and important exceptions. A listing name does not independently identify a specimen, and related animals can need different conditions. For uncertain stock, ask Isopod King for its established care and provenance before choosing equipment.
