Asian Forest & Emperor Scorpion Care Essentials

Heterometrus silenus and Pandinus imperator are separate animals. Both need sheltered, moisture-retaining ground setups, but one common black appearance does not confirm either identity.

Enclosure & shelter

Provide deep, diggable substrate, firmly placed cork hides and a secure lid. A shallow open layer over a hard floor does not give a burrower a useful refuge. Begin with one animal per enclosure.

Water, moisture & temperature

Maintain damp lower substrate without standing water or a sour, stagnant enclosure. Provide a shallow water dish and ventilation. Measure temperature where the animal actually rests; do not place an uncontrolled heater under its entire burrow.

Feeding & molting

Offer appropriately sized captive-bred insects and remove leftovers. Feed by life stage and condition rather than assuming every adult needs the same number of crickets. Avoid feeding a molting or newly molted scorpion.

Heterometrus silenus is not Pandinus imperator. Do not identify a forest scorpion solely from an overall black color.

Pandinus imperator requires a sheltered ground enclosure with diggable, moisture-retaining substrate and a clean shallow water dish. Keep the substrate damp rather than flooded and retain ventilation. Group housing is not reliably conflict-free: keep singly as the default, especially around molts or with mixed sizes. A reputation for mild venom does not make handling safe.

Keeper FAQs

Is every large black scorpion an emperor?

No. Appearance and common names are not enough to distinguish all traded forest scorpions.

Should the substrate be swampy?

No. Moisture must coexist with air spaces and ventilation.

Can I keep a group because they seem calm?

Cannibalism and conflict remain possible. Individual housing is the starting recommendation.

Are mild-venom descriptions a handling guarantee?

No. A sting or pinch can injure, and reactions vary. Observe without handling.

Everyday care checks

Check containment, drinking access and the animal's condition each day. Use captive-bred feeder insects appropriate to its size, remove leftovers and keep a record of feeding, molts and enclosure changes. Separate new arrivals from established animals and keep specimens individually as the default.

Keep pesticide sprays, scented cleaners and treated furnishings away from enclosures. Avoid direct sun and uncontrolled heat. A thermometer measures temperature; a humidity reading cannot tell you whether a burrow is dry, saturated or structurally stable.

Observe without handling. Do not force open sealed retreats or disturb a molting animal. Persistent weakness, injury or an unsuccessful molt needs experienced veterinary assessment rather than repeated improvised changes.

These guides explain care principles and important exceptions. A listing name does not independently identify a specimen, and related animals can need different conditions. For uncertain stock, ask Isopod King for its established care and provenance before choosing equipment.
