Fishing Spider Care Essentials
Fishing spiders are spiders associated with waterside hunting, not permanently aquatic animals. Their enclosure must provide secure dry resting surfaces as well as suitable access to moisture.

Representative catalog photo; follow the notes for your animal.
Enclosure & shelter
Provide firmly anchored bark, sheltered dry retreats and accessible surfaces above any water. A large open pool is not a substitute for a usable enclosure. Start with a simple arrangement that allows you to observe the animal and maintain water quality.
Water, moisture & temperature
Do not submerge the animal or assume all sizes swim equally well. Prevent tiny juveniles from being trapped in deep, smooth-sided water. Nilus sp. Cameroon remains a trade identification; its requirements must be confirmed separately from Dolomedes okefinokensis.
Feeding & molting
Captive-bred insect prey can form the feeding plan; a spider called a fishing spider does not automatically require live fish. Remove dead prey and dirty water before they spoil.

Dolomedes okefinokensis – Okefinokee Giant Fishing Spider

Dolomedes okefinokensis needs sheltered above-water resting surfaces, secure climbing access and appropriate hydration. It is not a permanently underwater spider. Use appropriately sized insect prey as the routine feeding plan; a fishing-spider name does not establish a need for feeder fish. Any water area needs easy exit routes and maintenance that protects small juveniles.

Nilus sp. Cameroon – Cameroon Fish Eating Spider

Nilus sp. Cameroon is an unresolved stock label. Published fish hunting by some Nilus does not establish an obligatory fish diet or prove that this exact stock requires a paludarium. Confirm its established arrangement before choosing water depth. Provide dependable above-water resting surfaces and insect prey of suitable size; avoid live vertebrate feeding as routine care.

Keeper FAQs
Must I feed fish?
No general fish requirement follows from the common name. These predators also consume invertebrates.
Can it live entirely underwater?
No. Provide dependable above-water resting and retreat surfaces.
Can a fishing spider share a tank with fish or frogs?
Do not plan a mixed display as routine pet care. Predation and incompatible maintenance needs can affect either animal.
Does 'Nilus sp.' identify the species?
No. Nilus identifies the genus, while sp. means the species is unspecified. A locality or trade name does not resolve that identity. Exact climate targets cannot be established from this label alone.
Everyday care checks
Check containment, drinking access and the animal's condition each day. Use captive-bred feeder insects appropriate to its size, remove leftovers and keep a record of feeding, molts and enclosure changes. Separate new arrivals from established animals and keep specimens individually as the default.
Keep pesticide sprays, scented cleaners and treated furnishings away from enclosures. Avoid direct sun and uncontrolled heat. A thermometer measures temperature; a humidity reading cannot tell you whether a burrow is dry, saturated or structurally stable.
Observe without handling. Do not force open sealed retreats or disturb a molting animal. Persistent weakness, injury or an unsuccessful molt needs experienced veterinary assessment rather than repeated improvised changes.
These guides explain care principles and important exceptions. A listing name does not independently identify a specimen, and related animals can need different conditions. For uncertain stock, ask Isopod King for its established care and provenance before choosing equipment.
