The Ceratogyrus marshalli, commonly known as the Straight Horned Baboon Tarantula, is an African burrowing species with a standout feature: a prominent, upright horn on the carapace. Earthy coloration, bold markings, and extensive webbing make this Old World tarantula a fascinating addition for experienced keepers.

Appearance:
Mottled brown and gray tones give this species a rugged, camouflaged look. Its distinctive straight horn sets it apart from other baboon tarantulas and makes it an unmistakable addition to a collection.

Temperament & Behavior:
This is a fast, defensive species best suited to experienced tarantula keepers. It may retreat into its burrow or stand its ground when disturbed. Like other Old World tarantulas, it lacks urticating hairs and should not be handled. Plan enclosure maintenance and rehousing carefully.

Life Below the Surface:
Give your Straight Horned Baboon deep substrate and a sheltered starting point, then watch as it excavates a retreat and lays down silk around the entrance. Its burrowing and web-building behavior is a big part of the appeal, even when the tarantula itself stays out of sight.

Habitat Requirements:

  • A secure terrestrial enclosure with ample depth for burrowing
  • Firm, diggable substrate and a cork bark hide or starter burrow
  • Good ventilation and an accessible water dish
  • Mostly dry surface conditions, avoiding persistently saturated substrate
  • Limited climbing height above the substrate to reduce fall risk

Care Level: Experienced
Enclosure Type: Terrestrial / Burrowing
Origin: Southern Africa
