The Sonoran Recluse (Loxosceles arizonica) is a native North American spider found throughout the Sonoran Desert of Arizona and into northwestern Mexico. A member of the infamous Loxosceles genus, this species is a fascinating study in cryptic behavior, elegant simplicity, and the quiet efficiency of one of nature’s most effective ambush predators. Tan to light brown with the characteristic violin-shaped marking on the cephalothorax, the Sonoran Recluse is a sleek, understated animal that rewards patient observation.

This is a species for the serious invertebrate keeper — someone who appreciates the biology and behavior of medically significant spiders and understands the responsibility that comes with keeping them.

Why Collectors Love This Species

  • Native Arizona species — locally sourced from the Sonoran Desert; a genuine piece of the American Southwest
  • Fascinating behavior — a reclusive, nocturnal hunter that constructs irregular, sticky webs in tight retreats; endlessly interesting to observe on its own terms
  • Iconic genus — Loxosceles is one of the most recognized spider genera in the world; a compelling addition to any serious collection
  • Hardy and low-maintenance — thrives in dry, warm conditions with minimal intervention
  • Compact and display-friendly — small footprint enclosure; ideal for a dedicated display setup

Care Overview

  • Origin: Sonoran Desert, Arizona & northwestern Mexico (New World)
  • Adult Size: Approximately 1–1.5 inches body length including legs
  • Temperament: Reclusive and non-aggressive; will only bite if directly threatened or pressed against skin — experienced keepers only
  • Enclosure: Small, secure enclosure with tight-fitting lid; cork bark, cardboard tubes, or similar retreats recommended
  • Substrate: Dry sandy or coco fiber mix, 1–2 inches deep
  • Temperature: 72–85°F; tolerates heat well given desert origins
  • Humidity: 30–50%; keep it dry with no standing water needed — a small bottle cap of water occasionally is sufficient
  • Diet: Small crickets, fruit flies, or other small soft-bodied insects; feed every 1–2 weeks

⚠️ Important Safety Notice

This spider is strictly for experienced keepers only and should never be handled. Proper containment and bite protocols must be in place at all times. By purchasing, you acknowledge awareness of the risks associated with keeping venomous invertebrates.
