Aphonopelma hentzi — the Texas Brown Tarantula — is one of North America's most iconic and beloved native tarantulas. Found across the grasslands and scrublands of the American Southwest, this species is a staple of the hobby for good reason: calm, hardy, and strikingly beautiful in its understated way. With a rich chocolate-brown carapace and dense, velvety abdomen, the Texas Brown is a display animal that earns its keep on any shelf.

This is the tarantula that generations of Texans have encountered crossing country roads in the fall — males on the move, searching for mates. Owning one is like keeping a piece of the American Southwest in your home.
