Natural Habitat & Behavior

In their native Amazon basin rainforests, Xenesthis intermedia inhabit tropical lowland regions where they create deep burrows or occupy existing crevices. They are accomplished burrowers and will extensively modify their enclosure with webbing and substrate manipulation. This species can be defensive when threatened and possesses urticating hairs that they readily flick. Despite their size and defensive capabilities, they are generally reluctant to bite. They are voracious feeders with massive appetites and will readily take down large prey items including insects and other appropriately sized food.

Care Requirements

• Enclosure: Large terrestrial setup with at least 5-6 inches of substrate for deep burrowing; provide a large hide or cork bark
• Temperature: 75-82°F with slight nighttime drop acceptable
• Humidity: 75-85% with good ventilation to prevent mold
• Feeding: Large crickets, roaches, or appropriately sized insects 2-3 times weekly; known for massive appetites
• Experience Level: Intermediate to advanced due to size, urticating hairs, and specific humidity requirements
