The Ephebopus rufescens, commonly known as the Red Skeleton Tarantula, brings warm reddish-brown tones and fascinating burrowing behavior to the collection. This New World species is an appealing choice for keepers who appreciate life below the surface as much as an occasional appearance at the burrow entrance.

Appearance:
Rich russet and earthy brown coloration gives the Red Skeleton a distinctive look. Color and markings vary with age and molt cycle, making each fresh molt another opportunity to appreciate this understated tarantula.

Temperament & Behavior:
A quick, often secretive species that favors the security of its burrow. It can react defensively when disturbed and is best suited to keepers comfortable working with fast tarantulas. Ephebopus have urticating hairs on their pedipalps, so avoid direct contact and do not handle.

A Window into Burrow Life:
Provide deep substrate and a sheltered starting point, then watch your Red Skeleton shape its own retreat. Silk around the entrance and freshly moved soil offer glimpses of its activity, even when the spider stays tucked away.

Habitat Requirements:

  • A secure enclosure with deep, diggable substrate for burrowing
  • A cork bark hide or starter burrow
  • Moisture-retentive substrate with a moisture gradient, not waterlogged conditions
  • Good ventilation and an accessible water dish
  • Limited climbing height above the substrate to reduce fall risk

Care Level: Intermediate to Experienced
Enclosure Type: Fossorial / Burrowing
Range: South America
