Springtails establish best when the terrarium already contains moist organic substrate, leaf litter, and protected spaces—but before a large amount of waste begins accumulating. They need habitat, not just a cup poured onto dry soil.
Prepare the damp network
Moisten the substrate zones beneath moss, leaves, and wood. Avoid flooding. Springtails will spread through connected humid pockets and retreat from areas that are too dry.
Distribute the culture
Add portions beneath several hides instead of concentrating everything in one exposed spot. Follow the culture medium’s handling method so animals and useful material transfer without introducing excess water.
Feed the system lightly
New terrariums often experience fungal blooms. Let springtails graze on the habitat, and add only a tiny supplemental food if the culture method requires it. Heavy feeding invites mites and gnats before springtails are established.
Keep a backup
Never empty the entire starter culture into one terrarium. Maintain a separate culture so you can reseed after substrate work, drought, medication, or an enclosure crash.
Quick checklist
- Moist organic zones connected
- Culture divided among hides
- Feeding restrained
- Backup culture retained
